Since being announced as the winners of Poppyscotland Learning’s Poppy Spaces & Places learning competition 2017 in May earlier this year, pupils and staff at Bun-sgoil Stafainn (Staffin Primary School) on the Isle of Skye have been working alongside the local community to make their winning memorial garden design a reality. Thanks to their winning combination of creativity, energy and dedication, Bun-sgoil Stafainn’s newly-renovated memorial garden will be unveiled at a grand opening on Saturday 8th September 2018.
Community gardening days were held over the summer months to complete work on the project, which included dismantling and repurposing old picnic benches, clearing weeds and digging a new bog garden, designed to represent the muddy conditions of the First World War. Once completed, Staffin’s memorial area will be given a new lease of life, providing the local community with a beautifully-designed place of Remembrance and reflection.
